Tradition Folk Lit- Beauty and the Beast

The book, Beauty and the Beast retold by Marianna Mayer, portrays this tale in a different fashion than the well known disney movie. Beauty had many selfish siblings, and this story shows the gains and losses of Beauty's family. The book is set up with the text on one side of the page with a white background and a detailed, intricate painting on the other side. The pictures capture the emotions of the characters and the surrounding. I enjoyed this book because I have never known any other vision than disney. This book would be helpful to teach children about the variety of folk literature available and how the versions change. It would also be interesting to teach children about different perspectives.
